Options for Joint Support
Smoking joints doesn’t carry the same meaning that they used to for many people. For some it’s old age setting in, while for others, particularly those who have participated in impact sports or subjected themselves to bouts of extreme training, joint problems start as early as one’s late 20s. Your body is a machine and without lubrication, parts break down causing decreased performance. The surface of joints are composed of bone covered with a lining of cartilage. During movement these cartilage lined surfaces rub against each other wearing down the cartilage. Thankfully getting a “repair” isn’t as complicated as taking your care into a mechanic and arguing a ridiculously high estimate. There are several options for joint care but what works and what’s right for you?
Glucosamine is the pop star here. One could say it’s the “creatine” of the joint kingdom. The research is abundant and points toward efficacy with no side effects. The only problem with glucosamine is that it’s not an instant cure. Supplementation with Glucosamine usually takes about a month to take effect. Glucosamine, an amino (amine) sugar (glucos), is a building block of glycosaminoglycans, a component of cartilage. Glucosamine supplementation is theorized to assist in cartilage growth thus reducing inflammation from joint stress. Glucosamine is often “stacked” with Chondroitin which together prevent the atrophy of cartilage.
Daniel O. Clegg, M.D., of the University of Utah School of Medicine conducted a two year study on the effects of Glucosamine Chondroitin on subjects suffering from osteoarthritis. The combination of Glucosamine and Chondroitin were proven effective in the reduction of patients with even severe knee pain. However, neither Glucosamine nor Chondroitin improved the subjects’ condition by itself.
A study performed at Queen’s University in Ontario, Canada also showed patients with osteoarthritis benefitting from glucosamine and chondroitin supplementation both before and post surgery.
Hyaluronic acid (HA) is part of what keeps our joints springy and able to absorb shock. With age, the amount of HA in the joint decreases. ven den Bekerom and Mulier conducted studies in Belgium with subjects ranging between 30 and 70 years of age who were experiencing hip inflammation and associated problems. A series of trials were run incorportating HA injections. The subjects were then evaluated using the VAS pain during walking score and the Harris Hip Score (HHS). The majority of subjects reported a significant reduction in pain and had improved HHS scores.
But not many can afford the cost of HA injections and/or do not care for the contrivances of doing so. So are oral forms of HA useful? Unfortunately, most studies have been on horses or rats and not humans. A study done in Czechoslovakia using a compound called “Chondrorevit,” which was a mixture of 20mg HA and 400 mg Chondroitin yielded positive results in patients as well.
Cissus quadrangularis is an extract from a vine plant in India. It is one of those hoodoo supplements that is marketed more on it’s exotic nature than any scientific merit. I’m not knocking it but it is of note that not much research has or is being done on it and while noted publications like JAMA have done exposes on Glucosamine they have not touched on Cissus. Cissus has a storied tradition of healing fractures and helping with arthritis in India. Recently it is being heralded as an anabolic compound. My eyes start to roll at this point. Don’t even get me started on phytosterols and how they ARE NOT the same as anabolic steroids, pro hormones, or even pop rocks. On Cissus.org there are many claims but evidence is in the form of a “dare” to search online for testimonials. I’d love to see open heart procedures lobbied like this. Even still, I am a big believer in holistic medicine and think that every witch should be given a chance before being drowned. Cissus has proven to be useful in weight loss in at least one study as well.
My new favorite supplement, for no other reason than it’s ABSURD nature and the veil of mystery that surrounds it, is Velvet Antler. When I say absurd I am not implying that this is a bogus product but rather that the notion of ingesting ground antlers is absurd (as if ingesting cow testicles and shark fins aren’t, but anyway). In fact, most of the few studies done on Velvet Antler have yielded promising results. Velvet Antler yields levels of Chondroitin sulfate. It also contains glycoamins, and calcium. All of these components have been linked and proven in studies to assist with joint health by stimulating the production of cartilage and the synthesis of bones.
One should always consult with a physician before starting any supplement regimen. With that in mind, it never hurts to experiment a little and see what works best. Though the combination of Glucosamine and Chondroitin is the most researched and popular choice for joint pain, many people report better results once they switched to Hyaluronic acid or Cissus, or tried Velvet Antler. What’s important is which one alleviates your discomfort and gets you back to your optimal training routine.
